Dumfries and Galloway Council report blunder probe

An investigation has been launched by Dumfries and Galloway Council after a confidential social work report was sent to the wrong person.

It is the second data blunder involving the department in the past five months.

The latest data protection breach involved a woman from Annan who received a social work file belonging to another person through the post.

The council confirmed the report had been issued in error and said it had contacted the affected party.

It said it would take "appropriate steps" to address the situation.

The incident will be the subject of a report to the Information Commissioner who will consider what, if any, action should be taken against the authority.

It is the second high profile data blunder by social services this year.

In June, a confidential file was left lying in a car park in Dumfries.

The details of that incident emerged less than 24 hours after the council launched a new data protection policy.
