Man in hospital after serious assault in Borders

A 35-year-old man is being treated in hospital after being the victim of a late-night town centre attack.

The man was seriously assaulted in the Stirling Place area of Galashiels at 23:20 on Friday and taken to Borders General Hospital, near Melrose.

Lothian and Borders Police have launched an investigation and appealed for witnesses.

The man is being treated for serious injuries, but they are described as not life-threatening.

The assault scene remains cordoned off and there is a high police presence in the area as the investigation into the incident continues.

A spokesman said: "Police are currently carrying out enquiries into the incident and anyone with information should contact police on 101, or make an anonymous report through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
