Borders Party's Iain Gillespie wins Leaderdale and Melrose by-election

Iain Gillespie Iain Gillespie of the Borders Party won the by-election for the Leaderdale and Melrose ward

Iain Gillespie of the Borders Party has won a by-election for a seat in the Leaderdale and Melrose ward on Scottish Borders Council.

He replaces Nicholas Watson, the former leader of his party, who resigned in February.

He joins independent David Parker and the SNP's Jim Torrance in representing the ward.

The overall turnout was a little more than 41%.

Rachael Hamilton of the Conservatives came second after having topped the poll at the first count.

Third was former councillor John Paton Day for the Lib Dems, with the SNP's Harry Cummings next followed in fifth by Robin Tatler for Labour.

UKIP candidate Sherry Fowler was sixth.

Returning Officer Tracey Logan said: "I am very pleased with how the by-election count has been run and with the magnificent efforts of our staff."
