More than 30 firefighters have put out a large fire at the Mermaid leisure complex at Southerness village on the Solway coast.

They were called out shortly after midnight. The complex is reported to have been completely "destroyed" in the blaze.

The holiday village, 10 miles south of Dumfries, has dozens of caravans.

Some holidaymakers had to be moved from the area of the fire but no one is believed to have been injured.

One man who was staying close to the fire said: "We were in bed when we were knocked up.

"We got out as quickly as we could because the building was blazing and there was smoke everywhere."

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "We received the call at midnight and sent five fire engines from Dumfries, Dalbeattie, and Castle Douglas, and one supervisory officer.

"Our firefighters used four hose reel jets, three main jets, and an aerial appliance and have been there all morning."
