Police have identified a man who died after being attacked in a house in a Dumfries and Galloway village.

He was Kevin MacKay, 40, of Castle Acre, Ecclefechan. He died at a house in the village's Peacock Place on Thursday evening.

The property has been sealed off and a major investigation is now under way.

Det Ch Insp Jim Kerr said he understood the "tensions" in the village and said there would be an increased police presence during their inquiries.

He urged anyone with information about Mr MacKay's death to contact them.

"I am asking the community to pull together at this time and help us bring those responsible for his death to account," he said.

"The community should be reassured that this is a very rare type of crime in our part of the country," he added.

"Any one of our officers will be happy to speak to the community to reassure them that we are doing everything we can to bring this matter to a close and to offer advice as required."
