Four treated after motorway charcoal spill

Four people have been treated in hospital after inhaling charcoal dust spilled in a crash involving two lorries.

The accident happened at about 05:50 on Friday on the A74(M) near Kirtlebridge in Dumfries and Galloway.

One of the lorries was carrying the charcoal which spilled on to the road, closing two lanes of the motorway.

No-one was injured in the crash but four people who inhaled carbon dust were taken to Dumfries Infirmary.

Firefighters wearing chemical suits and oxygen canisters cleared the road of the charcoal which was removed by Scottish Environmental Protection Agency officers.
