Boy, 8, struck by car near Gretna school

An eight-year-old boy is recovering in hospital this morning after being knocked down by a car near the primary school in Gretna.

He was hit by a Vauxhall Zafira on Canberra Road at about 09:00 on Thursday.

He was trapped underneath the vehicle before being released and flown to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary.

He suffered multiple injuries including a dislocated shoulder, fractured cheek bone and cuts to his head and face.

The driver of the car - a 28-year-old pregnant woman - was taken to the Cumberland Infirmary for checks.
