Galashiels' historic Mercat Cross damaged by van crash

A historic statue in the centre of Galashiels has been damaged after being struck by a white van.
The Mercat Cross in Scott Crescent, which dates back to 1867 in its present form, was struck by the vehicle at about 07:25.
The two men in the van were uninjured in the incident.
A spokesman for Police Scotland said an investigation would take place into the circumstances. Scottish Borders Council has been informed of the damage.
The Mercat Cross - which plays a major part in the annual Braw Lads' Gathering festival celebrations in Galashiels - was put back in its present form in the 19th century with the aid of funds from a public subscription.
However, a cross has occupied the site since 1599.
