Construction firm Balfour Beatty has won a £1.2m roads contract to help pave the way for a new general hospital in southern Scotland.

The works will see an upgrade of the Garroch roundabout on the A75 to improve access to the 350-bed complex.

RJ McLeod, Barr/Dumfries and Galloway Council, I&H Brown and Fox Building and Engineering Ltd were the other bidders.

Hospital project director Dennis O'Keeffe said it was another "significant milestone".

The contract to build the new general hospital will be awarded later this year.

Balfour Beatty and High Wood Health (Laing O'Rourke) remain in contention to secure the deal.
