Man dies after water rescue attempt in Solway Firth

A man who was pulled unconscious from water near an island in the Solway Firth has died.

The 67-year-old man had got into difficulties near Hestan Island on Friday afternoon.

He was taken by ambulance to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary but later died.

The man, who has not been named, was holidaying on the island with members of his family when the incident occurred.

It is believed he went into the water at the north end of the island to bring a log ashore when he got into difficulties.

Members of the Kippford inshore rescue boat took part in the rescue effort, along with a local man who pulled the victim from the water.

Police Scotland said: "We can confirm the man died in hospital after the incident.

"A post-mortem is being held but there do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances."
