A Borders councillor has called for Hawick to follow the lead of Galashiels and seek the appointment of a town centre co-ordinator.

Watson McAteer said the move could help to give the area a boost.

Plans are in the pipeline to appoint a co-ordinator for Galashiels, and the Hawick and Denholm councillor believes one should be funded for his area also.

He said the town had to fight for its share of services as it would not have a station on the Borders rail line.

"Like many town centres we are seeing real problems around empty shops and the poor state of the actual town and the streets," he said.

"It really is time we got together collectively and worked out what we can do to help solve that problem.

"We know that there are examples in other parts of the Borders with some really good thriving communities - Peebles is a great example and Kelso, to a certain extent, is very good.

"We can't be standing still on this - we have got to drive forward with a very clear agenda to improve the town."
