Flu bug closes Dumfries hospital ward to visitors

A ward at Dumfries Royal Infirmary has been closed following an outbreak of influenza.

Ward 12 has been closed to new admissions and transfers since the weekend.

Routine visiting to the ward, which is used by stroke and respiratory patients, has been temporarily restricted.

Eleven patients and two members of staff have been diagnosed with the illness.

Infection control manager Elaine Ross said the situation was being monitored and outbreak control measures had been implemented.

She added: "Our priority is always patient, public and staff safety.

"We appreciate that this temporary visiting restriction to Ward 12 may cause some frustration but we believe this measure will allow us to help prevent further spread of the infection and ensure safe patient care."
