Plans for new CCTV cameras for Hawick

Four new CCTV cameras could be installed in Hawick under plans to be considered by councillors.

Members of Teviot and Liddlesdale Area Forum will be asked to spend almost £11,000 on cameras for the High Street, North Bridge Street, Howegate and Drumlanrig Square.

They would be partly funded with money raised from pay-and-display parking.

The units are operated by Police Scotland and maintained by the council's street lighting department.

Councillors will be told that, in the long term, the local authority is unlikely to be in a position to fund the installation and maintenance of public space CCTV systems.

However the council and the police would be supportive of communities that are willing to fund their own CCTV systems.
