Police have said there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of a 13-year-old girl in Galashiels.

Aaliyah Sutherland, a second year pupil at Earlston High School, was rushed to Borders General Hospital on Sunday evening where she was pronounced dead.

Police were earlier called to an address in Galashiels following reports of concern for a person.

News of her death was broken to pupils at Earlston High on Monday.

At Galashiels Academy, where she attended for her first year, students were also informed of her death.

A spokesman for Scottish Borders Council said: "We can confirm the death of a second year pupil from Earlston High School.

"Support is in place for pupils and staff at the school and our thoughts are with her family during this tragic time."

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.
