Peebles pensioner fends off home intruder

A man in his 70s forced an intruder to flee after the man broke into the pensioner's home in the Borders.

The incident happened in a house on Dean Park in Peebles at about 14:00 on Saturday. Cash and jewellery was taken.

The pensioner found an intruder in his bedroom and police said a "struggle ensued" before the man who had broken in fled towards Edinburgh Road.

The suspect was about 5ft 8in, slim and was wearing a dark grey baseball cap, dark jacket and white T-shirt.

Insp Robbie Noble, of Police Scotland, said: "Fortunately the householder was unhurt during this incident.

"Whilst we would never advise a member of the public to take on a criminal, I commend his bravery in challenging and then pursuing the suspect, who fled on foot with cash and jewellery.

"This incident happened mid-afternoon and the intruder ran off towards the busy Edinburgh Road, so I'm keen to speak to anyone who may have seen him and may be able to assist our investigation."
