A 70-year-old man has been taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment following a serious accident on the A697 in the Borders.

Emergency services were called to the scene, between Carfraemill and Greenlaw, at about 12:35 on Wednesday.

A Ford Fiesta travelling north was in collision with a Mercedes Sprinter van heading in the opposite direction.

Police said the van driver was unhurt but the man driving the car suffered serious injuries.

The road was closed for a time but has since reopened.
