More than 650 Dumfries and Galloway Council staff have enquired about voluntary redundancy or early retirement terms.

It comes as the authority looks at a range of measures to cut its spending.

A total of 14 roadshows have been held across the region to provide information for staff interested in leaving their posts.

A report to the council said it had provided figures for hundreds of employees considering the move.

The council estimates it has achieved nearly £100m in cumulative savings by allowing nearly 700 employees to take early retirement or voluntary severance (ERVS) over the past five years.

A further significant number could now follow their example, if they find the terms provided sufficiently attractive.
