Charles Mellor

A search has been started for a man who went missing while fishing on the River Nith in Dumfries.

An inshore lifeboat, police dogs and fire crews are helping with the search for Charles Mellor, 57.

He is believed to have been fishing close to the former Carnation factory on Friday evening. He was reported missing the following morning after failing to return home.

The police have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.

Police Scotland said in a statement: "It is unlike Charles to disappear without contacting his family. They are understandably very anxious at this time.

"Our inquiries are ongoing to trace Charles safe and well. We are working with partners to search the area, including the water as a matter of course.

"Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and the Coastguard have been assisting with the inquiry."
