A 70-year-old woman who was badly injured in an incident at a Borders sheltered housing complex has died.

Police were called out to Priorwood Court in Melrose on Sunday 9 April.

The woman was taken to Borders General Hospital for treatment but a short statement released on Tuesday confirmed she had now died.

A 69-year-old man appeared in court last week in connection with the incident on a charge of attempted murder and was remanded in custody.

Det Ch Insp Stephen Healy said: "This is a tragic set of circumstances, and our thoughts are with the lady's family at this distressing time."

He described it as an "isolated incident".

"Our officers are continuing to support her family and we want to thank the local community for their support," he added.
