A man has appeared in court charged with murdering his uncle by putting a blanket over him and setting it alight.

Darren Williamson is accused of attacking 50-year-old James Williamson with a hammer before dragging him on to a couch and setting the fire at a house in Lewis Place, Perth, in March.

The 27-year-old is also alleged to have smashed smoke detectors with the hammer to stop them going off.

He denied murder during his appearance at the High Court in Glasgow.

Williamson, who is on remand, also pleaded not guilty to attempting to defeat the ends of justice by burying the hammer and burning clothes.

He will appear at the court again in September.
