Police have released an image of a violent offender who is on the run from an open prison.

The public are being warned that if they see 28-year-old Ian McDonald, who is originally from Paisley, they must not approach him.

He was jailed for four years in April 2009 after carrying out a serious assault.

He failed to return to Castle Huntly open prison, near Dundee, on Wednesday after being allowed out temporarily.

Tayside Police said that following his conviction for assault to severe injury, he was sent to HMP Glenochil and only recently transferred to the Castle Huntly jail.

He is described as being 5ft 10in tall, of stocky build, with short brown hair, and brown eyes.

He was last seen wearing a black Adidas tracksuit top with white stripes down both arms, a black sweatshirt, a white top, dark-coloured jeans and white Reebok trainers.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to contact police.
