Dundee fatal house fire victim named as George Martin

An 82-year-old man who died in a fire at his Dundee home in the early hours of Monday morning has been named by police.

George Martin was found in the first floor bedroom of his house in Mains Loan by firefighters.

He was treated by ambulance staff, but died at the scene, police said.

Fire crews were called to the house at about 0415 BST after reports of smoke coming from the building. The cause of the blaze is not yet known.

A spokesman for Tayside Police said: "A joint Tayside Police and Tayside Fire and Rescue investigation is continuing into the full set of circumstances surrounding the incident, but there are no apparent suspicious circumstances."

Twenty firefighters were sent to the house.

The fire service said the fire, which started on the ground floor, had produced "substantial amounts of smoke" that had spread throughout the man's home.

The blaze was contained within the house, which is not thought to have had a smoke alarm fitted.
