Officers searching for a man from South Ayrshire missing for eight days have said they have found his car abandoned 80 miles away.

Richard Lyon, 59, from Kirkmichael, was last seen by his family at 07:00 on 2 August.

Strathclyde Police said his car - a silver Honda CRV - was found on Doune Road, Dunblane, at about 10:15.

The force is investigating the possibility that Mr Lyon may be walking in local hills.

Mr Lyon has not been missing before and his disappearance is said to be completely out of character.

Police said he had been feeling "rather low" lately and his family were now extremely concerned for his wellbeing.

'Increasing concern'

He is described as 5ft 10in tall, of medium build with grey receding hair, and a full beard. He also wears glasses.

He was last seen by his family wearing jeans, a T-shirt and training shoes.

Officers are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen Mr Lyon in Dunblane, or the surrounding areas.

Insp Andrew Clapperton said: "As each day passes we are growing increasingly concerned for Mr Lyon's wellbeing, particularly since his car has now been recovered.

We are very concerned for his safety, and therefore I would urge anyone with information on his whereabouts to get in touch with officers at Ayr Police Office on 01292 664 000."

On Tuesday, Mr Lyon's son David flew in from Australia to make an appeal for help to find his missing father.
