A Dundee professor and internationally renowned painter has been elected as a member of the Royal Scottish Academy.

Alan Robb was appointed Emeritus Professor of Fine Art at Dundee University in 2007.

The 65-year-old also spent 20 years as the head of the fine art school at Dundee's Duncan of Jordanstone College.

The University of Dundee said his leadership had placed fine art at the college at the "very top" of the national league tables.

Professor Robb said: "I am absolutely delighted to be elected to the academy and hope that I can make a contribution to further the development of Scottish contemporary art through the RSA's projects and exhibitions."

The painter has exhibited his work around the world and will be honoured in Dundee early in 2012 with an exhibition at the city's McManus art gallery.
