Dundee cemetery targeted by vandals

Vandals have overturned headstones and damaged "treasured items" at a Dundee cemetery, causing £1,500 of damage.

Tayside Police said the "despicable" vandals struck at Balgay Cemetery between 16:00 on Sunday and 08:00 on Monday.

Six headstones were toppled over and several ceramic ornaments were destroyed in the northern section of the graveyard.

Among the broken items was a book with "Special Mum" written on it.

The vandals also smashed two cherubs, a pair of angel wings and a blue vase.

A police spokeswoman said: "This was a particularly despicable incident which understandably causes great upset to relatives who tend to these memorials.

"We would urge anyone who was in the area at the time and who saw anything that could help us to identify those people responsible to contact us immediately."
