Man, 93, dies after Arbroath flat blaze

A 93-year-old man has died after a fire in his home in Arbroath, Angus.

Firefighters were called to the man's flat at about 13:30 on Monday and entered the building using breathing apparatus to rescue him.

Paramedics treated the fire victim at the scene before he was taken Ninewells Hospital in Dundee but he died on Tuesday morning.

Tayside Fire and Rescue Service said the fire did not spread beyond the flat in Noran Avenue.

Fire engines from Arbroath and Carnousite were sent to the blaze.

A fire service spokesman said: "Our sympathies go to the family and friends of the deceased and the wider community of Arbroath.

"Tayside Fire and Rescue want to make all our communities safe from fire through an effective combination of prevention and emergency response activities.

"Many of the fire deaths which occur in Tayside are preventable."
