A violent offender who went missing from an open prison for more than a week has been found, police have confirmed.

Stuart Govan failed to return to Castle Huntly jail near Dundee on 22 February, after being allowed a day out in Perth.

Tayside Police issued an appeal for information about the absconded prisoner on Tuesday.

The force said he had been found in Stenhousemuir, Falkirk, on Wednesday evening and was now in custody.

The 24-year-old was sentenced to 16 months in prison in February 2011 after being convicted of assault to severe injury.

He was transferred from Glenochil prison to open conditions at Castle Huntly in December 2011.
