John McMurchie was murdered, say Tayside Police

John McMurchie

The death of a father-of-five in Dundee at the weekend is being treated as murder, police have said.

John McMurchie, from the village of Errol in Perthshire, was found badly injured in Dundee's Fintry Terrace, near its junction with Whitfield Drive, at about 04:00 on Sunday.

The 50-year-old died a short time later in Dundee's Ninewells Hospital.

A 63-year-old man who was initially arrested as a part of the investigation has now been released without charge.

Mr McMurchie had left an address in Murrayfield Gardens just half an hour before he was found injured in the street.

Tayside Police said investigations were continuing in the area where Mr McMurchie was discovered, as well as the address in Murrayfield Gardens, which is "of interest" to the inquiry team.

'Taken from us'

On Monday, Mr McMurchie's family paid tribute to the man they described as a "larger than life character".

It said: "'As a husband, brother, father to five and grandfather to two, as well as an uncle, John was loving and very much-loved by all of his family.

"No words can express the loss that we feel at him being taken from us so suddenly."

Officers from Tayside Police are reviewing both public and private CCTV, and asked any local businesses or householders who operated their own CCTV systems to contact the force.

The police also want to speak with anyone who was in the area of Fintry Terrace, Whitfield Drive and Murrayfield Gardens between 03:30 and 04:00 on Sunday.

That includes people making their way home from a night out or work, those out walking their dogs, or taxi drivers dropping off fares.
