Perthshire man found guilty of acting as a drugs courier

A 29-year-old man has been found guilty of acting as a drugs courier, after he borrowed his father's car to transport nearly £40,000 worth of cannabis.

Derek Brown, from Bankfoot, Perthshire, was found with drugs worth £38,400 in the boot of the car he was driving.

Perth Sheriff Court heard Tayside Police had intelligence that Brown would be using his parent's car to transport cannabis.

Sheriff Michael Fletcher deferred sentence until 16 January 2013.

Drug squad officers had been told to look out for the vehicle and discovered the haul of drugs boxed in the boot when they pulled it over.

Intelligence operation

The 29-year-old was on his way home to rural Perthshire when he was caught with almost 4kg of the drug wrapped up in a sealed cardboard box.

Fiscal depute Charmaine Cole told the court: "Tayside Police received confidential information that the accused would be using his father's car to transport controlled drugs north into the Tayside area on a particular evening.

"As a result officers from the road policing unit took up various stations along the A9 Dunblane to Stirling road to look out for the accused in his father's car."

Miss Cole told the court that the car was initially spotted at 22:35 and was pulled over at Balhaldie around five minutes later.

Herbal smell

When he was pulled over, Brown immediately told officers: "It's in the boot. It's weed."

Ms Cole said: "The officers opened the boot of the car and there was a strong herbal smell

"There was a large sealed cardboard box. There were four bags of cannabis within the box."

She said Brown told officers he was "not selling it" and the Crown accepted that he was acting as a courier for others involved in the drugs trade.

Sheriff Michael Fletcher deferred sentence for the preparation of criminal justice social work reports and Brown was freed on bail.
