Trainee Dundee teacher who filmed showering boys is jailed

A trainee Dundee teacher who hid a camera in his bathroom to film young boys in the shower has been jailed for two years and three months.

David Connelly hid a webcam in the shower when the boys came to stay.

At Dundee Sheriff Court, the 29-year-old pleaded guilty to taking or making indecent images of children between 4 November 2009 and 3 January 2010.

Sheriff Elizabeth Munro also placed Connelly on the sex offenders register for 10 years.

Connelly further admitted using lewd, indecent and libidinous practices and behaviour towards an 11-year-old boy on 8 June 2009.

Concealed camera

The court heard police raided his house in December 2011 following a tip-off that Connelly had uploaded the films to the internet.

They found videos showing Connelly concealing the camera before his unsuspecting victims came in.

One clip showed Connelly watching an 11-year-old boy undressing, before indecently assaulting him.

At court Connelly denied "any sexual motive" for his actions.

Fiscal depute Douglas Wiseman told Dundee Sheriff Court: "The accused was heavily involved in the care of children in his employment.

"On December 13 2011 information was received that the accused was suspected of uploading indecent images of children to a website."

When police arrived at his house in St Fillan's Road, Dundee, they found the boy Connelly had abused on film lying in the spare bedroom.

Mr Wiseman said: "A quantity of computer equipment was seized. This was examined, and on the tower found in the basement they found 35 videos.

"They featured young children having showers at the locus. He was seen concealing the camera in the shower to video the males.

"One of the videos shows sexual contact between him and one of the boys."

Tragic events

Police later took statements from the children and their parents. One parent, who had worked with Connelly, said she had "never had any concerns" about Connelly spending time with her child.

Sentencing Connelly, Sheriff Munro said: "This is a tragedy for you and you have all sorts of aspects of your personality that could have done good as far as young people are concerned.

"But you have done an awful lot of damage. You have betrayed the trust of people and there's no option but a custodial sentence.

"You don't seem to have any insight into your behaviour and are in denial about your sexual motivations."
