Councillors in Perth have approved controversial plans which could see the felling of a Scots Pine tree.

The tree stands in the grounds of Perth Academy but would have to be pulled down to make way for a new synthetic sports pitch.

Hundreds of pupils at the school called for the tree to be saved. They said it had become a tribute to two brothers killed in a car crash in 2009.

But the council's development committee approved the new pitch by one vote.
