Man, 78, drove drunk to swimming pool to have shower
A 78-year-old man who drove to the swimming pool to have a shower while three times the alcohol limit has been banned from driving.
Thomas Miller got drunk on 4 July after discovering alcohol his wife had hidden from him before she went on holiday.
After drinking it out of "devilment", he tried to drive to the pool in Kinross for a shower because his heating system had broken down.
He was banned from driving for 20 months and fined £1,000.
Miller claimed he had felt "absolutely nothing" after consuming the alcohol.
Police pulled him over in his Ford Ka at about 20:00 on Springfield Road in Kinross, where he failed a roadside breath test.
The pensioner was arrested and taken to the police station, where he recorded a lower level of 115mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath, the legal limit being 35.
Defending, solicitor John Adams said: "He had had a new heating system put in. It is faulty just now, so the reason for this drive was to go to Kinross swimming pool for a shower.
"Earlier that day his wife had gone on holiday and hidden the alcohol from him. He consumed it out of devilment and was then over the limit for driving.
"This was a stupid mistake. It seems like it was a one-off matter."
Sheriff Frank McGowan told Perth Sheriff Court: "He said he consumed the alcohol and felt absolutely nothing.
"That is the explanation he has given, but I am pretty sceptical about that."
