Police are investigating after an 67-year-old man was assaulted while out with his wife in Bonnybridge.

The victim was sitting on a wall on the High Street at about 21:00 on Sunday when another man shouted across the road, asking for a cigarette.

The stranger then began to shout abuse at the couple and assaulted the man, leaving him with cuts on his head.

He was helped into a taxi home by a passer-by, but was later taken to Forth Valley Royal Hospital by ambulance.

The assault took place near the Kismet Tandoori Restaurant on the High Street.

The attacker was described as being white, about 6ft tall, with short brown hair, and was of a muscular build.

Insp John Kellett said: "This was a vicious attack that was completely unprovoked.

"We are currently following a positive line of inquiry, but we want to hear from anyone who was in the area at around the time of his incident or who may have witnessed the events unfold."
