Fraud duo tried to buy TVs for 40p at Dundee store

Two men attempted to put flat-screen televisions worth £467 through a Dundee supermarket checkout for 40 pence, a court has heard.

Mathew Ferguson and Liam Gorrie deliberately scanned incorrect barcodes at the Tesco Extra store to avoid paying full price.

They were caught when staff at the South Road store reviewed CCTV footage.

Ferguson, 21, of Dundee, and Gorrie, 22, of Arbroath, both admitted fraud.

Gorrie also admitted obtaining a £329 television by the same method on a separate occasion, by paying 20 pence.

Jim Caird, defending Ferguson, said: "He has no previous convictions.

"He was given this numerical code to type in that magically produces a lower price for the particular item.

"He very much regrets it now."

Sheriff Alastair Carmichael deferred sentence for social work background reports - and released both men on bail.
