Snow Patrol singer Gary Lightbody said he was "heartbroken" at having to postpone receiving an honorary degree from Dundee University due to illness.

The 40-year-old musician was set to travel from his home in California to attend the graduation ceremony at the city's Caird Hall on Friday.

Mr Lightbody formed the band that would become Snow Patrol at the university.

The university said it would award the musician his honorary degree at a future graduation ceremony.

He said: "I am heartbroken to miss the graduation, and also the chance to see Northern Ireland playing in the Euro Championships, but I am hoping to make it back to Dundee at the next possible opportunity."
