Two held on suspected attempted murder of Gwent officer

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a vehicle reversed into a police car.

Gwent Police were following up reports of a grey Landrover Discovery being used at a burglary in Shirenewton, Monmouthshire, at about 1020 GMT.

A car was later stopped at Pontypool. The officer in the police car was taken to hospital but did not need treatment.

The two men, aged 38 and 40, from the Pontypool area, have also been charged with burglary and dangerous driving.

Police said a householder in Shirenewton told them that two suspects in the burglary had made off in a grey Landrover Discovery.

Around 20 minutes later, the vehicle was spotted in Usk town centre, travelling in the direction of the fire station toward Usk Village.

The vehicle was tracked as it then travelled towards Caerleon Road and then towards Llandegfedd reservoir area.

Police said that at Coed-y-paen, the driver of the Discovery saw a police vehicle in front of him before he reversed and collided with the police car behind.

Police are appealing for anyone who saw the vehicle at any time, or the actual collision, to call them on 101 (if in Wales) or on 0845 6071002 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
