The mother of an 18-year-old man killed when his van hit a tree in Powys has paid tribute to her son.

Anselm Lloyd Grindey, from Llanilar, near Aberystwyth, died at the scene of the incident on the A489 at Penstrowed, near Newtown, last Friday.

Delphine Grindey said her son "excelled himself in kind word, thought and deed".

He was a second year student studying painting and decorating at Coleg Powys in Newtown.

Dyfed-Powys Police said Mr Grindey was driving a white Vauxhall van when the crash happened.

He was released from his vehicle by a fire and rescue crew using cutting equipment, but he died at the scene.

Mrs Grindey said her son "excelled himself in kind word, thought and deed".

She added: "He was well thought of by all who knew him. This tragic accident has robbed us of a valuable member of the community."
