Police suspect arson in New Inn industrial units fire

Police are treating a fire at four industrial units in Torfaen as arson.

Four fire crews tackled the blaze at Gwent Auto Factors in New Inn, near Pontypool, late on Sunday.

Firefighters were still at the scene on Monday morning when a gas leak was reported and a nearby factory had to be evacuated.

But Gwent Police said that problem was resolved by Wales and West Utilities within about 10 minutes.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service was called at 2330 BST on Sunday after the units caught fire.

The service said two units were severely damaged and two were smoke logged.

A Gwent Police spokeswoman said: "Police and fire service were at the scene overnight. We are currently treating the fire as deliberately set and inquiries are ongoing."

She added that the 40 staff at a nearby factory were led to safety as a precaution following the reported gas leak, and the road leading to the industrial units was closed temporarily.

Firefighters were still at the scene damping down on Monday morning when an investigation started.

According to its website, Gwent Auto Factors is vehicle parts stockist.

Crews from New Inn, Cwmbran, Malpas, Caerphilly, Maindy and Usk tackled the blaze.

Meanwhile, crews was called to grass fires on Sunday night, with Aberdare, Pontypool and Pontypridd the worst affected areas.
