Girl, 6, dies in A465 crash between Gilwern, Brynmawr

A six-year-old girl has died and a woman was seriously injured after a two-car crash on the A465 Heads of the Valleys road in south Wales.

Gwent Police said their Peugeot was in collision with a Mercedes, in which two people suffered minor injuries.

The crash happened eastbound between Brynmawr, Blaenau Gwent and Gilwern, Monmouthshire at around 1100 BST.

All four were taken to Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny, where the girl was pronounced dead.

The road is closed in both directions between Gilwern and Conoco roundabout while emergency services attend.

'Life threatening'

Heavy traffic is reported in both directions.

A Gwent Police spokesman said: "The vehicles involved were a blue Peugeot carrying a female adult and child and a silver Mercedes carrying two females.

"All occupants were conveyed to Nevill Hall Hospital."

He said the adult in the Peugeot suffered serious head injuries and "currently remains in a life-threatening condition".

The two people in the Mercedes suffered minor injuries.
