Sexual assault outside Tesco in Canton, Cardiff

Police have appealed for a man who sexually assaulted a woman outside a Cardiff store to contact officers - before he is tracked down.

The woman, 25, was attacked on the forecourt of Tesco Express in Canton during the early hours of 1 May.

Police say they have been carrying out house-to-house inquiries, speaking to businesses in the area and tracing CCTV footage.

They want the offender to get in touch "before he is identified by CCTV".

"The victim is a 25-year-old local woman who had been socialising in the city centre with friends," he said Det Insp Noel Harris.

"It is possible that the culprit has followed the woman from the city centre to the location of the incident near Tesco."

The suspect is described as male, believed to be 25 to 40 years old, as having dark skin, of slight build with afro-style hair, and was wearing a black jacket.

Det Insp Harris added: "An incident room has been set up at Fairwater police station and detectives are currently following various lines of inquiry including CCTV images to try and identify the offender."

He said he wanted the offender to come forward before he was identified by CCTV.

Anyone with information, or who was in the area between 0300 and 0400 on 1 May, is asked to contact Fairwater CID on 02920 528 011 or independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
