Two prisoners and two guards were taken to hospital when a prison van overturned in a road crash.

The incident happened as the van was travelling from Pontypridd back to Cardiff Prison at around 1230 BST on Wednesday.

South Wales Police said the Reliance Security Group vehicle overturned on the A470 by Whitchurch Golf Club in Cardiff.

The casualties were treated for minor injuries and taken back to prison.

Firefighters helped four people from the van and dealt with a diesel spill.

Two prisoners and two guards, including the driver, were taken to University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.

A Reliance spokeswoman said: "They were taken to hospital as matter of routine and discharged with minor injuries."

The prisoners are now back in Cardiff Prison.

A police investigation has begun into the cause of the accident.

Officers said the prison van was not the only vehicle involved in the incident near the junction of the M4.
