Fire hits block at Thornwell primary school, Chepstow

An infants and nursery block of of a primary school in Monmouthshire has been destroyed by fire.

Fire crews were called to Thornwell Primary School in Bulwark, Chepstow, at 0107 BST on Friday, and brought the blaze under control four hours later.

Investigations into the cause of the fire at the wooden building continue.

Head teacher Linda Davies described the scene as "distressing" and hopes to accommodate children in the junior department when they return on Tuesday.

"You look at building and it's just a black mess covered in water," she said.

"It's just heartbreaking. All the hard work, all the children's, well everything that they've ever done over the last year has just completely gone up in smoke."

No-one was hurt in the fire at the 320-pupil school which was closed for half term.

Mrs Davies said the school would remain closed on Monday while plans were put in place to accommodate the infants.

"The community already is beginning to rally round," she added.

"We've had govenors and pupils coming round to see if we need any help which is very heart-warming.

"The school will remain closed on Monday and the plan is to integrate the infant children into the newly-formed classrom on Tuesday.

"The local authority intends to begin contacting parents and inform them what's happening."

Investigations into the blaze will begin again at 0930 BST.
