Menai Strait rescue boy, 12, 'lucky to be alive'
Coastguards say a 12-year-old boy who was rescued after falling into the Menai Strait at Caernarfon from a pier is lucky to be alive.
The youngster managed to hang on to a pillar and was helped out by a 65-year-old man who jumped into the water.
Holyhead coastguard said it received two emergency calls from members of the public at 1605 BST on Wednesday.
A spokesman said: "He's very lucky indeed because the current was very strong at the time."
He added: "There weren't any steps close by and he clung on to the pier."
The boy was taken to hospital at Bangor. He was cold and had swallowed water.
The man was treated by paramedics at the scene.
The Beaumaris lifeboat and a coastguard team from Bangor responded.
