GMC: Gynaecologist Kandanearachchi's year's suspension

A gynaecologist has been suspended for 12 months for "inappropriate sexual behaviour" towards a patient and a colleague.

Dr Priyantha Perera Kandanearachchi worked for Cardiff and Abertawe Bro Morgannwg health boards.

He denied his behaviour was sexually motivated, but a General Medical Council (GMC) panel in Manchester found it was in two of three cases he faced.

A review will be held before the end of the ban, said the panel.

The panel earlier heard that Dr Kandanearachchi admitted acting in an inappropriate manner during a consultation with a patient in November 2008 and a second patient in February 2010.

It found his actions towards a female colleague in July 2010 were inappropriate and sexually motivated.

In its ruling the panel said it found Dr Kandanearachchi "crossed the professional boundaries" in all three instances and his behaviour was "a serious departure from the standards expected of a registered medical practitioner".

"The panel is in no doubt that your actions amount to misconduct," its ruling said.

"The panel is of the view that such repeated misconduct undermines the confidence that the public is entitled to place in the medical profession, damages its reputation, and shows a marked lack of integrity."

It said his "fitness to practise is impaired by reason of your misconduct".
