Fire at Llanwern steel works breaks out overnight

Firefighters are still at the scene of a fire which happened at Llanwern steelworks in Newport earlier.

It broke out in one of the operating lines in the Tata-owned cold rolling plant.

The alarm was raised just after midnight on Monday but the fire was contained and no injuries have been reported.

Around 20 firefighters remain at the site and the cause is being investigated.

Crews from Malpas, Maindy and Roath attended.

A hydraulic platform was sent at the height of the incident.

A Tata spokesman said : "Work on that line has obviously stopped, but there are still other areas on the site still working.

"There was no risk to the community. The fire was in one of the operating lines at Llanwern. It was controlled by containment."

The spokesman confirmed that the fire was not in the hot strip mill, which was mothballed last week with the loss of 115 contract and agency jobs.

The company employs 1,400 at the plant.
