A 14-year-old cyclist has died after being critically injured in a collision with a car in Powys, say police.

The crash happened on the A483 north of Welshpool, between Four Crosses and Arddleen, at 16:40 GMT on Thursday.

Dyfed-Powys Police said the boy was taken to hospital in Shrewsbury before being transferred to Birmingham Children's Hospital.

Witnesses or people with information are asked to contact Newtown police on 101.

The boy had been out cycling with a friend, said police.

Sgt Sean Westlake of Dyfed-Powys Police said: "We are looking for anyone who saw these youngsters out cycling in this area yesterday evening around the time of the accident, which was 4.40pm.

"We are still trying to determine exactly what happened and any information the public can give us to help is greatly appreciated."

Sgt Westlake said the crash involved a black Volkswagen Polo car and the boy's BMX push bike.

The A483 was closed for six hours following the incident.
