Rescue of 11 French tourists on Powys-Ceredigion border

Eleven French holidaymakers, one of them pregnant, were airlifted off a remote mid Wales hillside after becoming lost.

The party, including four children, was picked up close to Furnace, near Machynlleth, by an RAF rescue helicopter as darkness fell on Sunday.

There were no injuries, and the ramblers were flown to Aberystwyth.

Officers from Dyfed-Powys Police and Brecon Mountain Rescue Team took part in the search.

The helicopter was from RAF Valley on Anglesey.

Brecon Mountain Rescue said it sent 15 volunteers to the scene after receiving a call from the police at about 2000 BST.
