Eighteen homes evacuated after gas leak in Coelbren

Householders have been evacuated after a propane gas leak in the village of Coelbren near Ystradgynlais.

The alarm was raised at 0950 BST on Thursday after an 800-litre LPG tank leaked at a property.

Approximately 30 residents have been evacuated to a safe area at the Miners Welfare Hall in the village.

Powys council says some pupils at Coelbren Primary School have been moved to other classrooms outside the cordon.

Social services staff have been deployed to the welfare hall to help residents.

Two fire engines were dispatched to deal with the incident at Heol Eglwys.

The local emergency planning department has been informed of the incident.

The fire service has sent a specialist 'Hazmat' officer to decant the faulty cylinder.

Dyfed-Powys Police are working with firefighters and the council to resolve the leak safely.
