Aberystwyth is to receive a £2.5m facelift which will improve access to the town's railway station and an area for buses.

The "transport gateway" scheme is being funded by the Welsh government, with £1m of the money coming from its Aberystwyth regeneration fund.

An additional £200,000 from the fund will be spent on improving the promenade.

Local people will be asked to submit ideas to make the prom more attractive.

Work on the transport gateway is expected to start on Monday.

Plans are to improve access to the bus stop area and railway station and provide an improved gateway to the town centre, said the Welsh government.

Ceredigion council applied for money for the project, and its leader Keith Evans said: "This is a unique opportunity for Aberystwyth.

'Extremely difficult'

"Without the regeneration funding the local authority would have found it extremely difficult to fulfil some of our plans for the town."

The promenade public consultation will be launched on 6 December.

The Welsh government named Aberystwyth a regeneration area in October 2009 and it was awarded £10.3m in March 2010.

There are seven regeneration areas in Wales.
