Hywel Dda Health Board extends hospital 'listening exercise'

A "listening exercise" over the future of hospital services in mid and south west Wales has been extended, says Hywel Dda Health Board.

Extra public meetings are scheduled in Carmarthen, Llandovery, Tenby/Saundersfoot and south Ceredigion, although the dates are yet to be fixed.

The extension was announced following a meeting to review the process.

Hywel Dda has four district generals and eight community hospitals.

The district generals are Bronglais in Aberystwyth, Withybush in Haverfordwest, West Wales General Hospital in Carmarthen and Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli.

There is strong opposition to the health board's proposals.

It said more than 1,100 people attended eight public meetings as part of a listening and engagement exercise, which ended on 24 February.

The new meetings will run from the afternoon into the early evening to accommodate those who work during the day.

Public meetings have also been organised independently over proposed changes to services in Llanelli and Aberystwyth.

Hundreds of campaigners from mid Wales held a demonstration outside the Welsh assembly last week.

Bronglais Hospital serves Ceredigion, parts of Powys and south Gwynedd, and it is the only district general hospital in mid Wales.

• Powys Local Health Board is holding public meetings about Bronglais in Machynlleth, between 15:30 and 17:00 GMT, and Llanidloes, between 19:00 and 20:30 GMT, on Monday.
